Carolina Day History: Carolina Day! On June 28th, 1776, one of the first major battles of the American War for Independence was fought at the mouth of Charleston Harbor. A months-old, incomplete fortress on Sullivans Island, constructed of palmetto logs and sand, and garrisoned by a few hundred untested Patriot citizen-soldiers, withstood the bombardment of several British Royal Navy warships with 260 cannons. This victory was likely observed by the residents of East Bay Street as they looked across the harbor from their homes, including Nathaniel Russell, who lived on East Bay at Longitude Lane! Each year, the city of Charleston commemorates the valiant effort of the 2nd and 4th SC Regiments under the command of General William Moultrie with a parade and public address.
