As summer rounds the corner in August, join Historic Charleston Foundation for the next installment of the History Matters Lecture Series. Sarah Ferguson, HCF's Archivist and Librarian, will present an engaging talk about the ultimate vacation: The Grand Tour.

What was "The Grand Tour?" Guests will hear references to "The Grand Tour" when visiting the Aiken-Rhett Historic House which refers to the period between 1857 and 1858 when the Aikens (Harriet Aiken, her husband Gov. William Aiken, and their daughter, Henrietta) traveled from one grand European location to another, touring and shopping. Using Harriet Aiken's travel diary from 1857-58, join Sarah Ferguson and travel from the Lowcountry to New York before crossing the Atlantic for months of sightseeing, schmoozing, and shopping. The Aikens traversed the Continent for culture and consumption, using this experience to fill the art gallery they were building at their home on Elizabeth Street in Charleston, South Carolina.
