Expert Lecture at the American Theater: Dr. Bernard Powers

The Civil War and emancipation transformed the South in dramatic and unprecedented ways. However, unlike popular perceptions, the end of slavery wasn’t immediate. The new world of freedom was at once exhilarating and daunting, threatening and appealing. But it was only defined through a process of countless negotiations and conflicts, both physical and psychological between freed people and their former owners. This swirling vortex of uncertainty was the foundation of a new South then and its legacy still informs our contemporary racial challenges.

This lecture will be presented by Dr. Bernie Powers, Founding Director of the Center for the Study of Slavery in Charleston, noted author, former professor at the College of Charleston, and past interim President and CEO of the International African American Museum.

Historic Charleston Foundation advocates for a future for Charleston that honors and protects its people, places, culture, and community.

As the Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser, the net proceeds from ticket sales and donations from patrons of The Charleston Festival provide HCF with critical resources needed to effectively protect one of our nation’s most treasured historic places. This support allows us to use our resources where and when they are most needed to affect successful outcomes against the challenges facing the Charleston community and to provide important educational opportunities for students of all ages. Thank you for your support!
