The Aiken-Rhett House (c. 1820), located at 48 Elizabeth Street, is open Monday 1 - 4pm and Tuesday - Sunday 10am until 4pm. You may visit anytime within those hours to enjoy a self-paced audio tour as we do not have reserved starting times. Visitors must complete their self-paced tours promptly by 5pm. If you are interested in a docent-led guided tour of the Aiken-Rhett House, docent-led tours are first-come, first-served and begin at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:30 pm.

Candlelight Tours at Aiken-Rhett House

Candlelight Tours of the Aiken-Rhett House Museum

Celebrate the holidays as Charleston’s elite did with a candlelight tour of the Aiken-Rhett House. In the 1820s, formal dinners and family gatherings reflected the wealth and status of families whose fortunes were tied to plantation agriculture. Tables were set with imported porcelain, fine china, and polished silver, and meals often featured multiple courses blending Lowcountry staples with international delicacies. Evenings extended into music, dancing, and elaborate entertaining, all made possible by the labor of enslaved men and women on the property. By candlelight, visitors can experience how the antebellum elite marked the holiday season with elegance, display, and family tradition in one of Charleston’s most iconic homes.

The House Museum is not handicap accessible or stroller friendly.

Recommended for ages 12 and above. Adults may enjoy an adult beverage post-tour if desired.

Candlelight Tours of the Nathaniel Russell House Museum

Step into 1808 Charleston with a candlelight tour of the Nathaniel Russell House to celebrate the holiday season. In this elegant townhouse, the holiday season centered on formal dinners in the richly appointed dining room. Tables were set with imported porcelain, fine china, and gleaming silver, reflecting the family’s mercantile success and international connections. Meals blended Lowcountry ingredients with delicacies brought from abroad, while evenings were filled with music, conversation, and refined social rituals. Guests on this exclusive after-hours tour will have a chance to view the home with these priceless pieces on display and will also gain insight into the essential work of the enslaved household staff whose labor made these celebrations possible. This tour offers a rare glimpse into the lifestyle of Charleston’s early 19th-century merchant elite. Light adult beverages are included in this tour, recommended for ages 12 and up.
