Ansonborough: Birth to Rebirth

Selected date

Thursday March 7

Selected time

6:00 PM  –  8:00 PM

Please join us March 7th for a very special History Matters lecture. Christina Butler will be debuting her new book,  Ansonborough: Birth to Rebirth, which chronicles the neighborhood's history from its colonial origins, when Lord Anson planned the town's first 'suburb', to the present.  The book describes the area's character, surroundings, and  historic architecture. Ansonborough: Birth to Rebirth is a joint collaboration between HCF and the Historic Ansonborough Neighborhood Association (HANA) in commemoration of HANA’s 50th anniversary (April 2019).

The well maintained Ansonborough of the present stands in stark contrast to the dilapidation that greeted new residents in the 1950s.  Historic Charleston Foundation created the Ansonborough Rehabilitation Program to revitalize the area.  Through a focused long-term approach and with support from new residents and several generous, preservation-minded donors, HCF revitalized Ansonborough into a vibrant and beautiful place. In fact, the Ansonborough Rehabilitation Project serves as a national model for preservation and is replicated in hundreds of communities today.

Ansonborough includes stories of historic residents, and interview quotes from longtime residents of the neighborhood during its transition to grandeur.  Historic Ansonborough Neighborhood Association's initiatives from the 1960s to the present to preserve the character and uniqueness of Ansonborough are also discussed.

Author Christina R. Butler is the owner of Butler Preservation L.C., a Charleston based preservation company specializing in building evolution reports, property research, house histories, National Register nominations,  and finish carpentry.  Christina is a full professor at American College of the Building Arts, where she teaches courses in architectural history, preservation, and senior capstone, and she is an adjunct professor for the College of  Charleston's preservation department.
